Guests arrived at Belmond’s Secret Retreat in restored classic cars running on electric power, and the pace for the next two days was set before anyone had stepped out. As a luxury hospitality photographer, I couldn’t have asked for a better start.
Set in the West Sussex countryside at Knepp Estate, the retreat brought together luxury travel professionals, speakers and carefully planned experiences built around Belmond’s idea of slow luxury. I love documenting events where every detail has been thought through. This one wasn’t about showing off a pretty venue. It was about real conversations and the atmosphere that defines a premium travel brand.
Why Is Luxury Hospitality Photography About More Than Beautiful Venues
Luxury hospitality photography captures how people experience a place, not just how it looks. Elegant interiors and picture-perfect landscapes are only part of it.
The real story is in the lunchtime conversations, the quiet pauses between guests and the feeling a destination creates the moment people arrive. For a brand like Belmond, photography has to carry the values behind the experience: exceptional hospitality, thoughtful design and a genuine connection to the surrounding environment.
That’s what made this assignment so enjoyable.
What Made Knepp Estate the Perfect Setting for a Luxury Retreat
Knepp Estate is known internationally for its pioneering rewilding project, and it gave Belmond’s retreat an ideal backdrop. It’s now one of Britain’s best-loved conservation success stories. Wildflower meadows, ancient trees and open landscapes encouraged guests to slow down almost immediately.
For a photographer, the location had everything:
- Soft summer light all day
- Natural textures and colours
- Open landscapes that framed the experience
- Quiet corners for genuine conversations
- Outdoor settings that never felt staged
The environment mirrored Belmond’s vision of luxury travel. Every photograph felt part of the landscape rather than in competition with it.

How Did Belmond Bring Slow Luxury to Life
Belmond built its reputation on experiences that let travellers slow down and soak up a destination. The Secret Retreat followed that approach. Instead of rushing from one activity to the next, guests had time for thoughtful details, good conversation and the outdoors.
You could feel it from the moment everyone arrived. Those restored classic cars, converted to electric power, paired timeless design with a more sustainable approach. From there, every experience nudged people away from busy schedules and towards the people and landscape around them.
Moments like these are a gift to photograph because they happen naturally. You don’t have to manufacture emotion when the experience creates it for you.
What Luxury Event Photography Capture Beyond the Schedule
The most memorable luxury event photographs often happen between the planned activities. Every event has a programme, but the best images rarely come from ticking off sessions.
The retreat mixed wellness experiences, inspiring talks and relaxed networking. I didn’t just document each session. I watched how people interacted with each other and with the place.
That meant looking for:
- Guests exploring the estate together
- Conversations between industry leaders
- Quiet moments of reflection outdoors
- Laughter during networking sessions
- Natural interactions that showed Belmond’s hospitality at work
Photographs like these tell a richer story. They show what it felt like to be there, not just what was on the agenda.
How I Photograph Guest Speakers Naturally
The best speaker photography focuses on authentic expressions and audience reactions, not just the person at the microphone. The retreat’s line-up explored sustainability, conservation and the future of travel. Speakers included:
- Cel Spellman, ambassador for The Wildlife Trusts
- David Mooney, CEO of London Wildlife Trust
- Poppy Delbridge, founder of Rapid Tapping
Keynote sessions need a different mindset from simply photographing a presentation. I watch for genuine expressions, how the audience responds and what happens before and after each talk. Those moments often convey the energy of a discussion far better than a shot of someone mid-sentence.
I worked discreetly throughout, which let me capture both the speakers and the conversations their ideas sparked.
How I Photograph Panel Discussions on the Future of Luxury Travel
I photograph the whole room, not only the panel. One highlight of the retreat was a panel on how luxury travel keeps evolving. The conversation went beyond destinations to sustainability, wellbeing and creating experiences that last.
Experts from across hospitality and wellness took part, representing:
- FRENCH BLOOM
- Wildsmith Skin
- Electrogenic
- Wild Movement Collective
- Le Manoir aux Quat’Saisons, A Belmond Hotel
- The Britannic Explorer, A Belmond Train
- British Pullman, A Belmond Train
Panels are a fun creative challenge because the story isn’t only told by the people speaking. Some of my favourite frames came from the reactions around the room. An audience member leaning in. A shared smile between panellists. A thoughtful pause after a big point lands.
Those moments say as much about the atmosphere as the discussion itself.
Why Food Is Such an Important Part of the Luxury Hospitality Experience
People remember hospitality through the moments they share around a table, and Belmond understands that better than most. Guests enjoyed an al fresco lunch created by Executive Chef Sven Hanson Britt, who leads the culinary vision for the upcoming Britannic Explorer, A Belmond Train. Against the backdrop of Knepp Estate, the meal celebrated seasonal ingredients, elegant presentation and the unhurried pace of the whole retreat.
When I photograph hospitality events, I’m rarely focused on the food alone. I’m after the atmosphere around it, because that’s what guests remember long after the plates are cleared.
During lunch, I concentrated on:
- Beautifully styled table settings
- Relaxed conversations between guests
- Seasonal dishes presented with care
- The landscape framing the experience
- Genuine interactions around the table
Together, they told the story of an event where hospitality felt effortless, not staged.
What Small Details Make a Luxury Brand Feel Exceptional
In luxury hospitality, nothing is there by chance. Every element feeds into how a guest feels, and that’s something I notice every time I photograph a premium brand.
Guests sipped alcohol free sparkling wine from FRENCH BLOOM, named the World’s Best Alcohol Free Sparkling Wine 2025. Alongside the styling, the surroundings and the programme, details like this reinforced Belmond’s modern take on luxury, where sustainability, wellbeing and understated elegance sit comfortably side by side.
Guests might not consciously register every detail. They still shape how the whole experience feels, which is exactly why they’re worth photographing.

How I Capture a Luxury Brand’s Visual Identity Through Photography
You start by understanding the brand’s visual language as well as you understand the event. Belmond’s aesthetic is elegant, understated and closely tied to its surroundings, so my photography followed suit. I didn’t direct guests or build overly polished moments. I let the retreat unfold and documented real interactions as they happened.
Some of my favourite images didn’t come from keynotes or organised activities. They came from guests strolling along meadow paths, conversations beneath ancient trees and shared laughter over lunch. Those in-between moments show an event’s true personality, and they give you imagery that feels authentic and timeless.
Why Does Travel Shape My Photography
Travel has influenced my life and my work more than almost anything else. Every destination brings new cultures, landscapes and experiences, and each one reminds me that every place has a story waiting to be told.
My approach stays the same whether I’m photographing a luxury retreat in the English countryside, a boutique hotel, a safari lodge or an international event. I look past the setting to the atmosphere, the human connections and the moments that make an experience memorable.
That’s a big reason I enjoy working with luxury hospitality brands. Beautiful locations help, sure. But it’s the people, the conversations and the carefully crafted experiences that bring those places to life.
What Made the Belmond Secret Retreat So Memorable
As the retreat wound down, one last moment felt perfectly suited to the setting. A group of white storks from Knepp Estate appeared overhead, gliding across the summer sky.
It was a lovely reminder of the landscape behind the event. Knepp’s commitment to rewilding has created a place where wildlife can flourish, and that added meaning to a retreat centred on nature, sustainability and thoughtful travel.
Moments like that are part of why I love event photography. The programme and the speakers tell one part of the story. The unexpected moments often leave the strongest impression.

How Event Photography Bring Belmond’s Vision to Life
Good event photography translates a brand’s philosophy into images people can feel. Belmond has built its name on exceptional travel, from iconic trains and hotels to retreats that connect guests with their surroundings.
The Secret Retreat at Knepp Estate brought all of that together. The countryside setting, the warm hospitality and the conversations about where travel is heading made for an experience that felt luxurious and grounded in nature.
My job was to document it in a way that reflected the Belmond brand while keeping the genuine atmosphere of the gathering intact. The photographs capture more than the schedule of a two-day event. They hold on to the people, places and details that made it distinctive.
