Photographing Kaya Mawa Lodge, a stunning boutique beach lodge on Likoma Island in Lake Malawi, was one of those experiences.
As a travel and hospitality photographer who has spent many years exploring Africa with my camera, I’ve been fortunate to photograph incredible landscapes, safari lodges and remote destinations across the continent. Yet Kaya Mawa stands out as one of the most peaceful and magical places I have ever photographed.
From golden sunsets over the lake to the relaxed rhythm of island life, every moment spent here felt like a reminder of why travel photography is such a privilege.

Lake Malawi is called the “Lake of Stars” because of the lanterns local fishermen carry on their boats after sunset. From the shore, the tiny lights shimmer across the water like stars reflected on the lake.
I’d heard people call the lake one of Africa’s hidden gems. Once I saw it, I got why. It stretches more than 560 kilometres through the Great Rift Valley and is shared by Malawi, Mozambique and Tanzania. With its clear water and sandy beaches, it feels more like a tropical coastline than an inland lake.
It’s also famous for its colourful cichlid fish, which draw snorkellers, divers and nature lovers from around the world.
Why Should You Visit Likoma Island?
Likoma Island is a small granite island in the northeastern corner of Lake Malawi, and it’s home to Kaya Mawa Lodge. Mozambican waters surround it, but it’s part of Malawi, and it has a relaxed character all its own.
Life here moves slowly. Sandy footpaths link small villages. Traditional wooden boats drift along the shoreline. Locals greet you warmly wherever you go.
With my camera in hand, I found something to shoot around almost every corner. A few favourites:

- Palm-fringed beaches and clear water
- Quiet village scenes full of everyday life
- St Peter’s Cathedral, standing proudly above the island
Likoma doesn’t feel crowded or overdeveloped. That kind of authenticity is getting rare, and it makes the island a great pick if you want tranquillity and real cultural experiences.

Kaya Mawa Lodge is a luxury boutique lodge on a secluded stretch of Likoma Island, and it’s easily one of the best places to stay in Malawi. Luxury feels effortless here. Nothing’s stiff or overdesigned. Everything blends into the surroundings, so the place is elegant and relaxed at once.
The name means “maybe tomorrow” in Chichewa and Nyanja, which sums up the pace. You might spend a day swimming in the warm lake, snorkelling among cichlids, having a spa treatment or reading on the beach.
Then the sun starts to set and the mood shifts. Candlelit dinners, gentle waves and clear African skies make for a peaceful evening. Photographing those moments was as rewarding as photographing the lodge itself.

Kaya Mawa runs entirely on renewable energy and invests in the local community. Of everything I saw there, this impressed me most.
Local craftspeople built the lodge, and it’s supported the surrounding community for years. It’s also Malawi’s first resort powered entirely by renewable energy, which helps protect the environment guests come to enjoy.
Many of these efforts run through the Kaya Mawa Trust, which funds local education, healthcare and small businesses on Likoma Island.

What Makes Photographing Kaya Mawa Lodge So Rewarding
For a travel photographer, Kaya Mawa offers endless chances to make story-led images. The lodge is designed to blend into the landscape rather than dominate it. Whitewashed walls, natural stone, timber details and open-air spaces frame the lake instead of competing with it.
Each suite has its own personality, but they share a connection to nature. Private decks, plunge pools and outdoor living spaces gave me plenty to work with, both for the architecture and for the experience of staying there.
I didn’t want to shoot only buildings. I wanted the atmosphere. Morning light on the lake, the warm tones of the stonework and the privacy of each space all became part of Kaya Mawa’s story.
How Does Kaya Mawa Compare with Africa’s Luxury Safari Lodges
Kaya Mawa feels very different from a safari lodge, and that’s what made this assignment stick with me. I’ve spent years photographing luxury safari lodges in Botswana, Mozambique and Kenya, where golden grasslands, big wildlife encounters and vast skies define the scenery.
Here the scenery’s softer. Turquoise freshwater, smooth granite and white sand replace the dusty tracks. The palette is calm and uplifting.
I like working in places that each tell a different story. Kaya Mawa pushed me to show luxury through simplicity. The beauty comes from the light, the landscape and the rhythm of island life.
What Is It Like to Stay at Kaya Mawa Lodge?
Staying at Kaya Mawa means long, easy days of swimming, snorkelling, kayaking and good food, with the lake always in view. I wanted to capture what that actually feels like, so I photographed far more than the architecture.
My shot list included:
- Guest suites and interiors
- Relaxed moments along the private beach
- Fresh, seasonal dishes served through the day
- Staff welcoming guests with real warmth
- Kayaking, snorkelling and diving
One of my favourite experiences was going beneath the surface. The water’s so clear that you can watch cichlids glide between the rocks. Shooting above and below the waterline let me tell a fuller story of the lodge.
What’s New Year’s Eve Like at Kaya Mawa Lodge
I spent New Year’s Eve at Kaya Mawa, and it turned into one of the highlights of the whole trip.
As the sun dropped below the horizon, guests gathered on the shoreline. The mood was easy and joyful, with the lake as a backdrop. Later, fireworks lit the sky and danced across the calm water. I stood barefoot on the beach, warm air all around, the lake lapping nearby. It felt like a magical way to welcome a new year.
You can’t plan moments like that as a photographer. They’re often the images people remember most, because they hold the emotion as well as the setting.
What Are the Sunsets Like Over Lake Malawi
Sunsets over Lake Malawi shift from soft blue to gold, pink and orange, and the still water doubles the light. I’ve photographed sunsets from the Okavango Delta to the Serengeti, and this lake has a character of its own.
It’s the best time of day to shoot. The softer light brings out the textures of the lodge, and boats drifting across the horizon add a little movement to each frame.
Some of my favourite photographs from the assignment came from these quiet evenings, when everything slowed down and the lake showed its best colours.
What Gives Lake Malawi Its Unique Spirit
The “Lake of Stars” is more than a pretty nickname. It describes the place.
Every evening, fishermen head out with lanterns that sparkle across the water like a blanket of stars. Watching that tradition carry on is simple, and I won’t forget it.
The lake has also inspired the Lake of Stars Festival, an internationally recognised celebration of Malawian music, art and culture. I wasn’t there during the festival, but it’s easy to see why this setting became its home.
Whether you’re after adventure, relaxation or photography, Lake Malawi gives you something that’s hard to describe and easy to feel. It’s peaceful and welcoming, and it’s full of quiet moments that stay with you after you leave.
Why Does Africa Keep Inspiring My Photography?
Assignments like this remind me why I feel so connected to Africa. I’ve travelled to more than 70 countries, 20 of them in Africa, and each one has taught me something. Luxury safari lodges in Botswana, conservation projects in Madagascar and island escapes in Malawi have all shaped how I tell stories.
The diversity keeps pulling me back. Every country has its own landscapes, cultures and pace of life, and each one offers moments worth capturing.
For me, travel photography has never been about documenting pretty places. It’s about preserving the atmosphere, the people and the experiences that make a destination memorable.
